1. AAN Reception: All Things Great and Small 
Friday, October 19
6:00 – 8:00 pm @ Cecilia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery

You’ll want to clear a spot on your living room wall before joining the Artists Association of Nantucket this Friday night – you may just come home with a new masterpiece! The All Things Great and Small reception will feature works measuring either 40 inches or two pieces that measure 8 x 10 or smaller, hence the great and small title. You can expect to find a range of artistic pieces, including jewelry, oil paintings, watercolors, ceramics, sculptures, mixed media, photographs, and textiles. For more information, see the AAN’s press release here

 

2. Buckle and Shake at the Chicken Box
Friday, October 19 + Saturday, October 20
10:00 pm @ The Chicken Box

Hightail it down to the Chicken Box this weekend to catch Nantucket’s favorite country and bluegrass band, Buckle and Shake. Featuring all star musicians on the banjo, fiddle, guitar, and drums – heck, you might even see a tambourine or two! Get ready to shake, rattle, and roll all night long. 3. Elder Expo
Saturday, October 20
10:00 am – 1:00 pm @ Nantucket High School

Bring your parents, grandparents, or a senior friend to the Elder Expo this Saturday! Dr. Rocco Monto, author of the book The Fountain will be kicking things off with a lecture about how to make “60 the new 30.” Then, Tammy Pozerycki will be talking about her work in researching dementia and her efforts to open the first Memory Cafe in Massachusetts. Finally, Chef Greg Margolis will host a cooking and tasting demonstration focusing on how to make the best out of your leftovers. 4. Book Signing: Russell Fielding – “The Wake of the Whale” 
Saturday, October 20
10:30 am – 12:00 pm @ Mitchell’s Book Corner

“Despite declining stocks worldwide and increasing health risks, artisanal whaling remains a cultural practice tied to nature’s rhythms. Russell Fielding’s The Wake of the Whale presents the art, history, and challenge of whaling in the Caribbean and North Atlantic, based on a decade of award-winning fieldwork.” So describes Fielding’s new book, a mix of scientific and social insight that is very pertinent to the history of Nantucket.  After the signing, head to the Whaling Museum at 6:00 pm the same day to hear Fielding give a detailed lecture about the book. 5. Family Fun Day at Camp Richard
Saturday, October 20
11:00 am – 2:00 pm @ Camp Richard

The Nantucket Land Council invites you to join them for the 2nd Annual Family Fun Day at Camp Richard this Saturday. They’re ready to celebrate their recent court case win with an all-out party, including live music, BBQ, guided nature walks, a scavenger hunt, camp games, pumpkin painting, and more! 6. Bartlett’s Farm Fall Festival
Sunday, October 21
11:00 am – 2:00 pm @ Bartlett’s Farm

Celebrate the season with the Fall Festival in the Garden Center at Bartlett’s Farm. The whole family will enjoy a pumpkin carving contest, hay rides, great food, games, goats for petting, beer tastings, face painting, hay rides, fall snacks, and more! 7. Sea of Opportunities Cardboard Boat Race
Wednesday, October 24
8:30 – 10:30 am @ Harbor View Way

Support your local pirate gang with the Cardboard Boat Race! This beloved community event kicks off the new school year for the Sea of Opportunities Oceanography & Martime Studies students at the Egan Maritime Institute. Students learn the processes of conception, sketching, modeling, building, testing, and critiquing in this fun and challenging exercise. For more information, click here

 

8. Food for Thought Lecture Series: Where is the sand going and how does it get there? 
Wednesday, October 24
12:00 – 1:00 pm @ The Whaling Museum

If you’re interested in erosion, the ocean, and how our island ecosystems are changing, this talk is for you. Join Dr. Mark Borrelli at the Whaling Museum to hear about his work in the science of sediment budgets and regional sediment management. Make sure to bring a bagged lunch with you! 9. Film for Thought: Hal
Wednesday, October 24
6:30 pm @ The Dreamland

Todd McCarthy of the Hollywood Reporter described Hal as “a most welcome reassessment of one of the most important figures in 1970’s Hollywood.” Learn about the mysterious and offbeat career of Hollywood director Hal Ashby in Amy Scott’s latest documentary. We promise you it’s a good one – it received a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Featuring Judd Apatow, Beau and Jeff Bridges, Jane Fonda, Dustin Hoffman, Cat Stevens, Jon Voight and more.
