Two Overdose Victims Sent To Nantucket Cottage Hospital From Mid-Island Rental

Nantucket Police and EMTs had just revived an unresponsive overdose victim with Narcan at a mid-island residence last Thursday night and loaded him into an ambulance when another man at the rental home began going in and out of consciousness before collapsing in front of the first responders who were still on the scene. The second overdose victim was treated with Narcan and another ambulance was called to the property on Micheme Lane, just several hundred yards away from the Public Safety Facility on Fairgrounds Road.

The Micheme Lane rental home where the overdoses occurred.

The group at the rental home told officers that they had ingested alcohol and cocaine that night, and police believe the narcotic may have been laced with an opioid. After both men were transported to Nantucket Cottage Hospital, the remaining people in the home refused to let detectives search the residence. The incident occurred at a four-bedroom home with a cottage on Micheme Lane that is listed as a short-term rental going for $6,000 to $12,500 per week.

According to a Nantucket Police Department incident report by Officer Chase Colasurdo, units responded to the home around 10 p.m. on Sept. 23rd for a report of an unconscious and unresponsive male. The victim was found on the floor of the basement living area, where Nantucket Fire Department EMTs administered Narcan, allowing them to stabilize him and move him to the ambulance. Officer Colasurdo then began interviewing the other people in the home.

“All stated they were in the other room when they heard a loud bang in the living area, as if someone had fallen over,” Officer Colasurdo wrote. One of the men being interviewed “displayed the beginning signs of an overdose” but stated he had not ingested any cocaine.

Officers and EMTs noticed that the man began “shifting in and out of consciousness,” according to the report. “I asked once again if had ingested any cocaine (the other victim) had overdosed on and he replied he had in fact taken some, only a lot less than him. Immediately I called NFD EMTs Barber and Fey. Barber and Fey remained on scene evaluating (the person) while the other EMTs transported (the first victim) to NCH. During the medical evaluation (the second victim) collapsed. EMTs guided (him) to the ground and rendered aid. With an ambulance or none of their department equipment available, NFD used two doses of Narcan and police medical supplies until another ambulance could be dispatched scene.”

The matter remains under investigation.
