Through 20 minutes of play Saturday afternoon, Whaler girls soccer head coach Brian King felt good about his team’s performance. They had several scoring opportunities in the first half and played strong team defense, but a small defensive breakdown in the final ten minutes of the opening half led to an East Bridgewater goal. That goal was the first of six on the day for the Vikings, who beat the Whalers 6-0 on Saturday.
“One of their strikers was in a one-on-one situation with (goalie) Macy Crowell and Macy came out, did everything she could have in that situation by getting big, but their striker was clearly experienced and was able to sneak it by her,” King said. “Then in the second half I thought we played them well again in the first 20 minutes too. We were right there with them. I think we just ran out of gas.”
King said his bench is thinner this year compared to years past. Crowell had a strong game in net for the Whalers despite the 6-0 loss, making 25 saves.
“Macy is a super athletic person,” King said. “Whatever sport she plays she seems to excel at it. She has been playing goalie for as long as I can remember. If we had another goalie she would be a really good field player for us as well. She is one of our captains and a senior leader. I think she has some aspirations of playing at the college level. I think she is motivated this year to get out there, get people looking at her, and give her some options.”
The Whalers will look to win their first game on Tuesday when they host the Barnstable Red Raiders at 4 pm.
