Man Hospitalized After Hitting Deer While Driving eBike 47 MPH On Bicycle Path

A man driving 47 mph on a $5,000 dirt eBike on the Old South Road bicycle path Tuesday evening was hospitalized after hitting a deer and being ejected onto the asphalt.

The 31-year-old man was driving a Segway X260 dirt eBike (model pictured above) west on the bicycle path toward the Milestone rotary when a deer ran out in front of him in the vicinity of 33 Old South Road, according to a police report.

The eBike “subsequently struck the deer, causing the operator to be ejected onto the asphalt. Police estimated his speed to be 47 mph – which is the eBike’s maximum speed – based on the location where the eBike was found, and the initial brake marks left on the bike path pavement.

“The operator of (the eBike) has sustained possible serious injuries, and was transported to Nantucket Cottage Hospital by NFD,” according to the report.

The accident occurred around 4:37 p.m. on Tuesday, shortly after sunset. The extent of the man’s injuries is not known, and it’s unclear if he will face any charges related to the accident.
