Girls Hockey Splits Weekend Games

The Whaler girls hockey team beat the Marshfield Rams 4-2 Sunday afternoon after losing to the Cape Cod Furies 5-1 on Saturday. Head coach Liz Collins said she was happy her team won but was quick to point out that the plethora of penalties they committed are unacceptable.

“We need to clean that up,” she said. “We can’t be doing that. But given we played back to back games, the energy wasn’t lacking. The girls were ready to play.”

Claire Misurelli started the scoring off against Marshfield with a goal late in the first period. Defenseman EJ Hemingway picked up the assist After Misurelli scored, she skated over to a young fan who came to the game with a sign in support of Misurelli, his favorite player.

The Whalers went into the second period with their 1-0 lead, but went on to score the next two goals. Senior captain Evelyn Fey showed off her speed, weaving past a pair of Ram defenders to create a breakaway opportunity and scored to make it 2-0 midway through the second period.

Sophomore forward Bailey Lower made it 3-0 with 2:35 to go in the period to give Nantucket the 3-0 lead they would take into the final period.

The Rams got one back 1:34 into the third period, but Lower scored her second goal of the game and 16th goal of the season 7:21 into the final period to make it 4-1.

The Whalers didn’t do themselves any favors with all of the penalties they committed. They gave the Rams plenty of opportunities to string together a bunch of power play goals, but the Nantucket penalty kill was up to the task.

Marshfield added another goal to make it 4-2 Nantucket, but that was all they would get. It was a nice bounce back effort for the Whalers after being beaten by the Cape Cod Furies. They were only able to muster one goal against the Furies, which was scored by Lower.

Nantucket improved their record to 3-8-1 and will host Sandwich on Saturday, February 12, at 5:15 p.m.
