The Whaler field hockey team earned a 3-0 victory over the St. John Paul II Lions Wednesday afternoon. They improved their record to 2-0-1 in their last three games after losing their first four games of the season.

“We played well and came out strong right off the bat scoring in the first five minutes,” head coach Dan Weber said. “It was nice to be on the right end of a chunk of goals being scored.”

Audrey Manning scored the Whalers first goal. Caroline Allen and Ali Bamber scored the Whalers two goals in the third quarter to give them a comfortable cushion to ride out the rest of the game.

“I think we have done a good job of coming out and putting pressure on teams early,” Weber said. “Especially in these last three games. We have been coming out so strong and I think that sets the tone for the game. Offensively we have just found out what works for us, which is get the ball outside and up the sidelines. We have been doing that and smoothly transitioning from defense to offense.”

The Whalers will look to win their third game in four matches when they host Sturgis East today at 4 pm.

Boys Soccer Beats Sandwich 3-0
The Whaler boys soccer team won their second game in a row at home yesterday, defeating the Sandwich Blue Knights 3-0. The Whalers have won four of their last five games after a disappointing 4-0 beating in their season opener against Barnstable early last month.

“Everyone is sort of finding their sea legs if you know what I mean,” head coach Rich Brannigan II said. “Everyone is stepping up, understanding their roles, and getting comfortable. I was very happy with our defense today. Justin (Ho-Shue) was great in net and had some great saves for us.”

Alejandro Chacon got the scoring started for Nantucket five minutes into the game off an assist from Yeison Gregorio Castro in the first ten minutes of the game, then David Lemus-Castro scored eight minutes later off an assist from Treyce Brannigan to make it 2-0 Whalers.

“We preached to our guys after the game against Martha’s Vineyard to have our next game be an all-around strong performance,” Brannigan II said. “This was just such a good team performance and a great effort.”

Lemus-Castro scored again with 14 minutes left in the game off another assist from Brannigan, which sealed the match for Nantucket. Brannigan II said while his offense was sharp today, his defense and Ho-Shue were the stars of the match.

“There weren’t a lot of emergency moments or scrambles in the back,” Brannigan II said. “Justin had to step up and make a couple stops in that second half. It is hard to be a goalie where you can be doing nothing one second and then be thrown into the fire the next second.”

The Whalers will look to improve their record to 5-2 on Saturday when they host Archbishop Williams at 12 pm.

Girls Soccer Losses To Sandwich
The Whaler girls soccer team lost to the Sandwich Blue Knights 4-0 yesterday. The Whalers played a strong defensive game for most of the first half, but the Blue Knights scored two late goals in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

“This is just a great group of girls that never stops battling despite us only having two subs today because of an injury,” head coach Brian King said. “We have a tough schedule and play a lot of big schools. I think we played well for most of this game. Sandwich just capitalized on some of their chances.”

The Blue Knights scored another goal early in the second half and one in the closing minutes of the game to break the game open and make it 4-0.

“We never gave up but we are working on making some adjustments by getting the ball into the midfield more and getting the ball forward more,” King said. “Our defense has been playing great and Macy (Crowell) is always outstanding.”

The Whalers will host Archbishop Williams on Saturday at 1 pm.

Golf Losses In Tiebreaker To Sturgis East
The Whaler golf team lost to the Sturgis East Storm 4-3 Thursday night in a tiebreaker, dropping their record to 3-6 this season.

Cole Evens shot a 40 and won his matchup by one hole. Aidan Sullivan shot a 49 and won his matchup by four holes. Cosmo Tedeschi shot a 43 and won his matchup by two holes.

Henry Kathawala went home without a win, but had the Whaler’s best score, shooting a 38.

The Whalers will look to rebound when they host Monomoy on October 5th at 3:45 pm
