Sitting on a deck with a spritz in hand is a wonderful way to enjoy a Sunday. Sitting on the deck of Via Mare watching the bustling town of Nantucket go by is the ONLY way I enjoy a Sunday.
Via Mare does brunch right and it’s become a weekly staple for myself and many friends. Their brunch is easy and uncomplicated, yet perfectly sophisticated. The breeze runs through the covered deck; fighting off any humidity that lingers. The servers are engaging, casual, and knowledgeable about their menu that always keeps up with the seasons. And, both the food and wine bring excitement to anyone who decides they want town’s most wonderful brunch.
After our weekly Aperol Spritz our minds are clear and focused on the extensive wine menu. You can go in many directions with the Via wine list that is joyfully curated and served by Sommelier’s Julia Korkosz and Christina Peterson. The list takes you all over the world with a focus on natural, biodynamic, and small producers. Don’t worry Burgundy lovers, there’s plenty of that too. What I really love are the many hidden gems and particularly their excitement toward chilled reds. They can stand up to anything on the brunch menu, while offering the refreshment one needs after a long night out on the town (or at work).
Christina guided us towards a Jura red to pair with our upcoming deliciousness. The food started to hit the table and our eyes widened. The antipasti board, with its four meats and four cheeses is the perfect start. The salty, crunchy, funky, and gamey flavors all get the palate going and prepared for an early afternoon feast. Next, the crudite comes; this is my favorite dish on the menu because it is everything Via Mare is all about. It’s simple and smart, the veggies are all from Aidan at Fog Town Farm and Dan at Washashore Farm. They’re served in an earthy umami bomb consisting of porcini powder, soy, and nutritional yeast. This is a must try.
For entrées my companion and I go “halfsies” on the smash burger and the spicy chicken sandwich. They’re both messy and delicious. The burger is crispy, moist, and All-American. With crisp lettuce and onion, special sauce, and two beef patties, it brings down the house. It’s only to be outdone by the chicken sandwich. Known to many as the best chicken sandy on island, the spicy and crunchy delight will knock the hangover right outta ya. Wash that spice down with a chilled alpine red and you are ready for your day.
You can enjoy Via’s brunch on both Saturday and Sunday from 11:30am – 3pm. Let the crew do their thing and take you on an adventure. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the vibe.
