In the photo above, the victim is being driven off the beach in a Trustees of Reservations truck with members of
the NFD. She was transferred to an ambulance that was waiting at The Wauwinet hotel parking lot, and taken to Nantucket Cottage Hospital in stable condition, according to fire chief Steve Murphy.
A person who arrived at the scene after the woman was struck told the Current the driver of an orange Jeep was pulling out of his spot on the beach when he hit the woman, believed to be in her 70s, who was sitting in a beach chair. It’s not yet clear if the driver will be charged with any offenses.
The initial report prompted Nantucket Harbormaster staff to respond from Washington Street in a four-wheel drive truck. They were the first to locate the victim, about three miles out from the gatehouse, near the Galls. Other lifeguards responded from Madequecham Beach on ATVs and helped stabilize the victim, along with a doctor who happened to be nearby on the beach, before the victim could moved off the beach by EMTs.
Great Point was closed to all vehicle traffic while the response was underway.
