Police Investigating Stolen Truck On York Street

Nantucket Police are actively investigating a report of a stolen motor vehicle that was taken from a residence on York Street Saturday night.

Penelope “Pen” Austin told police that her gray 2007 Toyota Tacoma truck was stolen from her driveway sometime after 10 p.m. Saturday night. She noticed it was gone Sunday morning when a friend stopped by to pick her up, but thought she wasn’t home due to the truck not being in the driveway. Austin told police the truck, which was filled with bricks from her landscaping company, was unlocked and that she had left the keys in the vehicle overnight.

“Ms Austin was advised on how that was not a good idea, and that unauthorized use / motor vehicle thefts take place often on Nantucket,’ officer Jack Moran wrote in the incident report.

As of Tuesday night, the truck was still missing even as Austin and her friends have been “searching high and low for it” around the island, Miranda Holmes told the Current. Holmes said she had driven Austin around the island for five hours the day after it went missing, looking in beach parking lots, at different bars, the backs of hotels, and in the moors, assuming that someone had simply taken it for a joyride and ditched it. But the truck has yet to turn up.

After confirming that Austin had not authorized anyone else to use the truck, Officer Moran completed the paperwork to formally declare the vehicle as stolen. It is currently flagged as “HOT VEH; STOLEN VEHICLE” with the Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) and a “be on the lookout” or BOLO order had been sent to all island patrolmen, detectives and sergeants within the Nantucket Police Department.

The license plate for the gray Tacoma truck is 693FZ3 and anyone who spots it on the island is urged to contact the Nantucket Police Department at 508-228-1212.
