PLANTING OUTSIDE THE BOX

Flowerboxes are an integral part of Nantucket exteriors, allowing for traditional, gray-shingled homes to achieve explosive color and originality while providing a creative outlet for green-thumbed homeowners and gardeners alike. Each year, The Nantucket Garden Festival challenges gardening enthusiasts to take their creativity outside the confines of the traditional planter, and explore containers that rarely, if ever, get stuffed with soil and plants. The result is “What’s Your Vessel?,” a fun contest that stacks up gardeners young and old in a lighthearted flower-boxing match. At the end of the festival, these creative works are auctioned off, with all the proceeds donated to the Lighthouse School.
