NMF: Ben Taylor

Live at Acoustic Long Island

Taylor lives on the neighboring island of Martha’s Vineyard, and although he spent much of his young adulthood running from it, he couldn’t ignore his musical fate. Taylor is the son of one of the most famous folk singers of all time, James Taylor (“You’ve Got a Friend,”), and singer/songwriter Carly Simon (“You’re So Vain”). He didn’t want to become a musician by default. Through hard work and musical experimentation, Taylor has become famous in his own right for mastery on acoustic guitar, singing, and songwriting.

In 2001, Taylor created the Ben Taylor Band and played for a few years, going on tour with Dar Williams before setting out on his own solo career. Taylor released his first album, Famous Among the Barns, which placed 31st on the Billboard Chart for independent albums, and Another Run Around the Sun, which placed 38th.

Taylor’s music can be compared to Bob Dylan, Jack Johnson, Steely Dan, and his father, depending on the song, but with certain appeal to younger generations. For easy listening, try listening to his heartfelt song, “Dear Boy.” Taylor shows his playful side with the antithesis of a love song in “Wicked Way,” off of his most recent album, The Legend of Kung Folk [Part 1 (The Killing Bite)] in 2008. It’s catchy and soothing, and despite the lyrics, Taylor’s voice sounds loving and gentle enough to give this song the illusion of being a love song.

Ben’s sister, Sally Taylor, has played at the Summer House, and this summer will be Ben’s Nantucket debut on the main stage.
