Island Man Who Destroyed Sparks Avenue Sculpture Headlines This Week’s Court Report

The Nantucket Current will begin publishing a weekly court report every Wednesday. It will not include minor motor vehicle offenses. An island man who struck the six-foot tall sculpture that stood at the center of the Sparks Ave., roundabout was arraigned in Nantucket District Court on Monday.

Charles F. Sayle III, 41, of 9 Hooper Farm Road, was arraigned on Sept. 19 charges of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, malicious destruction of property under $1,200, and possessing an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle. He had not-guilty pleas entered on his behalf and was ordered to return to court Oct. 25 for a pretrial hearing.

According to the statement of facts provided by the court, officer Chase Colasurdo spoke with Sayle III and noticed his eyes were glassy, bloodshot, and the smell of alcohol was emanating from his mouth.

Colasurdo said Sayle III initially agreed to perform field sobriety tests, walked over to Colasurdo with unsteady and lethargic movements, and after completing the ABCs and counting tests, declined to continue when asked to stand on one leg.

Colasurdo confirmed that the sculpture was completely destroyed after Sayle III hit it with his vehicle. Several open beer cans and one hard seltzer can were found in the vehicle’s center console.

In other District Court news this week, Toby Earle, 27, of 10 Surfside Drive, had the probation he was serving on a guilty plea to possessing a class B drug terminated after completing one year of probation

After completing six-months of pretrial probation, Allison Strasenburgh, 40, of Plymouth, had an Oct. 14, 2014 charge of larceny over $250 dismissed.

Owen Chambers, 55, of 14 Essex Road, had Nov. 7, 2020 charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and assault dismissed after the alleged victim in the case declined to cooperate with prosecutors.
