The Nantucket Fire Department looks at one another as family. After watching captain Nate Barber battle cancer in 2019 due to high levels of chemicals found in firefighter turnout gear, island firefighter Ethan Fey said he along with others in the department have tried to do their part to raise money for cancer research and those in need of care by participating in the B-Fit Challenge at TD Garden.

“We see this as a great opportunity to raise money for continued research and to help those in need,” Fey said. “It has become a pretty large event bringing first responders from all over the state, some of which we spent months with at the Massachusetts Fire Academy.”

Fey will be participating in the fundraiser with three other island firefighters: Scott Holmes, Michael Finnegan, and Kevin Ramos. The B-Fit  Challenge is in its sixth year and will take place on February 6, a Sunday, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

First responders and community members are welcome to participate in the event through walking or running to benefit first responder charities. All money raised by these four island firefighters will go to the New England Firefighter Cancer Fund. Fey said this group has participated in this event for a few years. The race is also offering a virtual option this year for anyone interested in participating. People are eligible to run virtually from January 28 until February 4. All participants are required to raise a minimum of $300 with all of the money going to the charity of their choosing.
