The Whaler field hockey team lost their season opener to the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins 4-0 Saturday afternoon. Head coach Dan Weber said he was happy with his team’s first game against opposing competition in nearly two years.
“The rest of our coaching staff and myself are really proud of the girls and how they played,” he said. “It is the first game we have had against another school, 11-on-11, in over a year. I felt like personally we very much held our own against a team that has been traditionally very good.”
The Whalers trailed 1-0 at halftime. Goaltender Maclaine Willett had a strong game with 25 saves, Weber said. The Whalers trailed 2-0 with eight minutes remaining in the game when one of their goals was disallowed for a violation.
“That was a bummer because it would have been a 2-1 game with eight minutes left and we would have had all of the momentum,” Weber said. “The game was even closer than that 4-0 score indicates because it was really 2-0 with five minutes left in the game. Then they scored a couple late ones.”
The Whalers will host Falmouth today at 3:45 pm. Weber said his team will need to bring their best effort to the field this afternoon.
“When we played Falmouth last time they were pretty strong,” he said. “Hopefully we can build on this performance and put in a strong effort against Falmouth. We were able to get our legs under us after one year off. After playing a lot of 7-on-7 this past year or two it was nice to get back into 11-on-11 play against an opposing team”
