EMERITUS: NANTUCKET BOOKWORKS & SECOND STORY LOFT

Written By: Emme Duncan | Photography By: Brian Sager

When it came time to renovate Nantucket Bookworks, owner Wendy Hudson turned to local architect Matthew MacEachern and his team at Emeritus. Originally a one-story, 19th century building, Emeritus was tasked with adding a second floor and previously non-existent basement level while maintaining the original integrity and charm. The new building’s exterior trim detail is an exact replica of the original mold while the interior book shelves and checkout desk were salvaged and re-used. The building is also now 100% handicap accessible. The second story apartment takes full advantage of the high roof line with an ode to the downstairs bookstore in the form of a stunning library loft. With large windows lining the living space, the apartment blends effortlessly into the street-scape below allowing guests to feel fully connected to the outdoors.
