Delroy Lawrence Fosters Basketball Community On Nantucket

If you live on the island and have an interest in basketball, you probably know Delroy Lawrence and his impact on the island’s basketball community. Delroy can be regularly seen down at the Boys and Girls Club playing pick-up basketball, in the stands for boys basketball games, and on the sideline as an assistant coach for the varsity girls basketball team.

Follow this link and you will find a short video on the Nantucket Current’s sports Instagram page with clips of some of the island’s basketball talent this past month – both young and old – honing their craft and developing their skills ahead of the basketball season.

What can’t be seen in these clips is that each of these players is doing so under the watchful eye of Lawrence, a Nantucket High School alum who represented the Whalers on the varsity basketball team from 2005-2009.

Delroy has a reputation for not only being an excellent basketball player, but an excellent mentor and teacher of the island’s youth who aspire to have success at a similar level on and off the court to what Delroy has achieved.

“I definitely have a love for the game and as I have gotten older I have found a love for teaching the game,” he said. “I feel like as somebody who grew up here, learning how to play the game here with Nantucket being a big part of my basketball experience, I feel like as someone who is part of the community I should give back to this younger generation of basketball players coming up.”

“If I have the time and energy I am going to give it. That is what I have been doing. That is what I will continue to do. The results speak for themselves based on what a lot of these guys have been able to accomplish so I am going to continue to do what I am doing until I am not able to anymore.”
