The Whaler boys soccer team tied the Archbishop Williams Bishops 1-1 Saturday afternoon. David Lemus-Castro was the goal scorer for Nantucket, converting on Nantucket’s first penalty kick this season. He continues to be one of their most consistent and effective offensive players.
“I didn’t yell out anything and I wanted to see who would step up to make the kick and David already had the ball in his hands right away, took ownership of the situation, and that is what I love to see as a coach,” head coach Rich Brannigan II said. “I don’t like indecision. I don’t like people looking around like who is doing what. He did the work and he embraced the moment to give us a lead.”
The Whalers went into the second half with a 1-0 lead, but the Bishops continued to generate pressure and eventually put one in the back of the net to tie the game 1-1. Nantucket had several scoring opportunities throughout the game and while the Bishops had some offensive chances, the Whalers carried the play for much of the match.
“I was really happy with the competition level and how are team responded to the level of competition we were playing,” he said. “I felt like both teams presented the other team with different challenges through their style of play, skills, different strengths and weaknesses. It was a good result but obviously we would like to get that win. But we felt good about how we played, we will learn from it and we will grow from it.”
The Whalers will look to improve their record to 5-2-1 when they travel to take on the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins Tuesday at 4 pm.

Girls Soccer Loses 2-0
The Whaler girls soccer team is still searching for their first win of the season after losing to the Archbishop Williams Bishops 2-0 on. Saturday. The Bishops scored on a Nantucket own goal to take a 2-0 lead and didn’t score their second goal until the final ten minutes of the game. The Whaler’s defense continues to be strong while the play of goalie Macy Crowell, who had 12 saves in this game, continues to keep Nantucket in games.
“It was a very even game,” head coach Brian King said. “We had scoring chances in both halves but just couldn’t put the ball in the net. Cydney Mosscrop had the best chance when she didn’t give up on a shot on goal. The Bishop goalie dropped the ball and Cydney was able to get it towards the goal but just couldn’t get enough on it to score. But it was a great individual effort on her part.”
The Whalers will be back in action on Tuesday when they host the Dennis-Yarmouth Dolphins at 4 pm.
