Boys Hockey Loses To Bishop Stang

The Whaler boys hockey team lost to a tough, physical Bishop Stang team 4-1 Saturday afternoon.

The Whalers had a strong first period, but were unable to bury any chances. Stang scored one goal in the first period, which seemed to take the wind out of Nantucket’s sails.

Stang followed it up with another goal in the second period to make it 2-0 after two periods, and iced the game with two more goals in the final period. Nantucket was able to break the shutout in the final couple of minutes, but still went home with a loss.

“It wasn’t our best effort,” head coach Scott Corbett said. “It didn’t seem like mentally we were ready to play today and it hurt us. We weren’t executing. We couldn’t receive a pass coming through the neutral zone to save our lives. We kept giving it up in the neutral zone and when you do that it ends up in the back of your net.”

Corbett said he wants his team to shoot more when they get a power play chance. He believes that shooting more and being more aggressive at attacking tired defenders with speed as his players spring into the offensive zone could help them score more goals.

“There are worse things that could have happened,” Corbett said. “We could have played a game like that in the first week of March but hopefully we got it out of our system.”

The Whalers will host Martha’s Vineyard on Thursday at 2 pm in a game that will likely determine whether Nantucket or the Vineyard wins the Cape & Islands Lighthouse Division League. For more photos from Saturday’s loss to Bishop Stang, click here.
