Almost Ready To Open, New Land Bank Parks Get Official Names

The Land Bank is just weeks away from cutting the ribbons on two new public parks, and have settled on official names for both of them.

The Hays property off Milestone Road will be known as “The Creeks Preserve” and a ribbon cutting ceremony has been scheduled for Nov. 26. The name was selected, in part, because the Hays property will eventually unite with several other existing Land Bank properties overlooking The Creeks, according to executive director Jesse Bell. The historic cottage (c. 1890) that remains on the property will be identified as the “Hays Overlook” with a quarterboard. Lucile Hays, who sold the nine-acre property to the Land Bank for $9 million in 2019, will be back on the island with her family for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Meanwhile, the Land Bank’s new dog park off Miacomet Road is also nearing completion, and will officially be named the “Land Bank Dog Park.” Although no opening date has been set, Bell said it will likely happen in November to allow new grass sufficient time to establish. In the coming weeks, Land Bank staff will be installing the final elements including benches, waste receptacles, drinking fountains and signage.
